Nightclub Two Step
First I would like to say that Nightclub Two Step is a fun and exciting dance. Although many portray this dance as a spot dance it works well moving across the dance floor as well as in place. I would like to be able to say that NC is a ballroom dance, but to make this claim would not be true. Nightclub Two Step is not a ballroom dance although it is very popular in ballrooms; it originated from a line dance called the "Surfer Stomp" that would go SIDE, CROSS, SIDE, Stomp, SIDE, CROSS, SIDE, Stomp. The only problem with this dance is that when the music got slow, side cross side did not work any more. Buddy Schwimmer was doing this dance back in 1965 when he developed the NC basic for slower songs and partner dances. The basic pattern as it is taught in ballrooms is Side, Rock Step, Side Rock Step. The dance itself works better if you start on the Rock step, this allows you to immediately something other than the basic. East Coast Swing works the same way (although many people are still hell bent on starting with the triple step).
The dance itself has developed greatly through being introduced to ballrooms around the U.S. and also other parts of the world. The only thing that I would say about NC being in ballrooms is that the original character of the dance may be lost to some degree due to the fact that most ballroom teachers try make the dance a ballroom dance (when by its namesake it is a nightclub dance). The NC two step uses a more relaxed natural hold than a ballroom frame for say Latin or smooth dances (it is actually similar to east and west coast swing in the closed positions).
NC 2 Step continues to gain popularity even to this day more and more people learn to dance this fascinating dance in all it's varied forms. A sincere thank you from the ballroom community to Buddy for his discovery of this movement and for helping spread it across the globe.
